Hear From Our Patients

Non-Specialty Medication

What is a Non-Specialty Medication?

Non-specialty medications treat common conditions such as diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), and high cholesterol. Your Primary Care Physician (PCP) is the one who most often prescribes these medications.

Your doctor can send your prescription directly to Pharmacy Advantage electronically or by fax. If you would like to transfer your prescription from a different pharmacy to Pharmacy Advantage call (800)-456-2112 (Relay users dial 711) and a Pharmacy team member will coordinate the transfer.

Most prescriptions can be filled through Pharmacy Advantage, however, in some cases your health insurance plan may require you to use a preferred pharmacy. If your insurance mandates your prescription to another pharmacy, a Pharmacy Advantage representative will transfer your prescription to the appropriate pharmacy and contact you with the transfer details.

Prior Authorizations

Select non-specialty medications may require a prior authorization from the health plan before a medication receives approval and is shipped to the patient. The prior authorization may require additional information that includes a patient’s medical and medication history, required tests, or lab results. This is to make sure the medication prescribed is the best choice for the patient’s diagnosis and medical condition.

Medication Delivery and Storage

Your medication(s) will be delivered directly to you through USPS, FedEx, or a private courier. Please allow 3-5 business days for your medication to ship. Stay ahead of possible delays in your therapy by requesting refills as soon as they are available. Typically, this is after three-quarters of a medication is used, or after 68 days of a 90-day supply or 22 days of a 30-day supply.

Patients may receive specific medications in temperature-controlled packaging to ensure the safety and stability of the medication. If medication requires shipping in a temperature-controlled environment, patients should bring medications inside as soon as possible from outdoor elements (extreme heat or freezing temperature) and follow medication storage instructions enclosed with the medication packaging.

How to Take my Medications

Depending on the medication, dosing may be orally (by mouth), a self-injectable (with or without an auto-injector, or your healthcare provider may need to administer the injectable.

Specialty Medication

What is a Specialty Medication?

Specialty medications treat complex, chronic conditions such as cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, and auto-immune diseases.

From the time a healthcare provider prescribes a specialty medication to when the patient receives the medication can seem untimely or different compared to traditional medications.

Prior Authorizations

Healthcare providers prescribe specialty medications for chronic and complex medical conditions that may require a prior authorization from the health plan before a medication receives approval and is shipped to the patient. The prior authorization may require additional information that includes a patient’s medical and medication history, required tests, or lab results. This is to make sure the medication prescribed is the best choice for the patient’s diagnosis and medical condition.

Special Considerations for Specialty Medications

Specialty medications may have specific storage, monitoring, and dispensing requirements and for this reason may not be available at retail pharmacies.

Depending on the medication, dosing may be orally (by mouth), a self-injectable (with or without an auto-injector, or your healthcare provider may need to administer the injectable or infusible medication in the provider office. In addition, specialty medication usually requires additional education beyond traditional medication dispensed at a retail pharmacy.

The healthcare providers nursing staff will provide the patient with instructions and a demonstration on how to use the medication properly. Our clinical pharmacist’s partner with the healthcare provider and provide medication education and instruction, and side effect management to achieve the best possible health outcomes.
